The Process
While this procedure can occur in conjunction with other procedures, that is not always the case. We will need to verify the patient is a candidate for this procedure during a consultation. Once we go over the details and set a date, we will help the patient prepare for the procedure and any follow-up care. Here is information on the process and what the patient needs to know.
The Consultation
During the consultation, we will:
Review the patient’s medical history Examine the patient’s current condition Determine the most effective procedure for what the patient wants to change Prepare the patient for the procedure Go over any important follow-up care stepsThis is the ideal time for patients to ask any questions about the procedure and address any concerns they might have. During the consultation, we also need to know if the patient has had any surgical work done to their face prior to beginning this procedure. In some cases, past surgical procedures on or around the same area can affect the procedure.
We will also go over the patient’s expectations for the outcome of this procedure and how close we can help them get to make those expectations a reality. The patient may also need to receive a physical examination and an eye exam before this procedure.
The Surgery
The patient will not need to stay overnight for this procedure and will be under anesthesia during this procedure. This way, the patient will not feel any pain during the procedure. During this procedure, we will cut along the eyelid and remove excess skin, muscle and fat. If we are treating the lower eyelid, we may need to redistribute some of the fat, muscle or sagging skin around.
Regardless of the technique we use, we will ensure the patient’s safety during this procedure. The surgery can take up to around two hours. The patient will need to take the day off from work or other responsibilities.
Follow-up Care
Following the surgery, the patient will need to remain under medical supervision for a while to ensure there are no major health concerns. However, the patient will be able to leave that same day and continue resting at home. Following the surgery, patients will need to:
Avoid rubbing the eyes Wear dark sunglasses to protect against sun and wind Apply ice packs to the eyes for 10 minutes every hour the night after the surgery Continue to apply ice packs to the eyes several more times the day after surgery Gently clean the eyes with prescriptions eyedrops Don’t use contacts for at least two weeks following surgery Use cold compresses to reduce any swellingTo learn more about this procedure and see if it is right for you, give us a call and schedule an appointment today.
