    The goals of plastic surgery

Plastic surgery can be used for both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes. It aims to improve the patient's appearance by correcting things the patient would like to improve as far as their physique is concerned. This is done using treatments that have been tested countless times before being made available to the public.

Plastic surgery can be used to deal with issues like:

  • A poorly-shaped nose
  • Unwanted fat in certain areas
  • Flabby arms
  • Neck or back pain caused by oversized breasts
  • Saggy breasts
  • Small breasts
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Puffy eyes
  • Saggy eyebrows
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Oversized ears
  • Excessive skin caused by significant weight loss
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Hand injuries
  • Burn scars
  • Replant amputations

    Common plastic surgery procedures

Popular treatments used to fix some of the issues listed above include:

    Liposuction

This procedure is used to get rid of fat from areas that tend to be vulnerable to fat accumulation like the arms, face, belly, thighs, buttocks, back or hips. At times, exercising and dieting are not always enough to get rid of the fat in these places. The plastic surgeon uses a thin tube – called a cannula – that is connected to a vacuum to extract fat from the patient's body.

Liposuction can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures like tummy tucks and breast augmentation. It is worth noting that liposuction does not eliminate cellulite, it only removes fat. It is quite common for people to confuse the two things.

To be a good candidate for liposuction, the patient needs to be in good health. They should also:

  • Be close to their ideal weight. People who are severely overweight generally are not eligible for liposuction
  • Have healthy, elastic skin
  • Abstain from tobacco products
  • Those with blood circulation issues, heart disease, a weakened immune system or diabetes are typically not eligible for this procedure.

The different types of liposuction patients get to choose from include:

  • Tumescent liposuction: This is the most common way to perform the procedure. The fat being extracted is loosened up with a sterile solution that contains epinephrine and lidocaine. It also makes the procedure less painful and reduces blood loss
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): This technique uses sound waves to liquefy fat cells before they are extracted
  • Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): A laser is used to liquefy the fat before extracting it with a cannula
  • Brazilian butt lift

A Brazilian butt lift is a plastic surgery treatment that is used to improve the way the patient's backside looks. It does not make the person's buttocks bigger, it only improves the contours. During a Brazilian butt lift, excess fat and skin are extracted from the patient's buttocks. The person's skin is then repositioned to improve the tone of their buttocks.

Augmentation procedures can be used to alter the size or shape of the patient's buttocks by using fat extracted from other parts of their body or implants. A Brazilian butt lift can be combined with other cosmetic procedures like a lower body lift or a tummy tuck.

Skin becomes looser as a person gets older. Other factors like exposure to sunlight and drastic weight loss can also lead to loose skin. This leads to parts of the body, like the buttocks, sagging. Brazilian butt lifts are typically performed on those:

  • Who have just lost a lot of weight and have been able to maintain their new weight for over a year
  • Who have a healthy weight but want to improve the way their buttocks looks
  • With loose skin who have undergone procedures like liposuction
  • Breast augmentation

Medically termed augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that is used to increase the size of a patient's breasts. It includes the placing of implants under the patient's chest or breast muscles.

Breast augmentation is used for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. For some patients, it helps to increase their confidence, while others need it to rebuild their breast after battling certain health issues.

    Breast augmentation helps patient's to:

  • Improve their appearance if one breast is smaller than the other or if both are too small
  • Make up for the reduction in breast size that occurs after pregnancy
  • Improve the patient's self-esteem
  • Correct for changes to the breasts after battling certain health conditions
  • Mommy makeover

This procedure makes it possible for women who have had children to restore their bodies to the way it looked before their first child. At times, exercising and dieting is not enough to get rid of the physical changes that occur during a pregnancy.

With a mommy makeover, annoying issues like a "muffin top," sagging breasts or loose skin on the tummy are dealt with. It is no surprise that this is one of the more popular plastic surgery procedures.

Mommy makeovers are the reason many celebrities look the way they have always looked regardless of how many kids they have. Dieting and exercising regularly goes a long way when it comes to rebuilding the body after a pregnancy, but it is hindered by the hormones that are released during pregnancy. It causes the person's body to deposit stubborn fat layers that seem impossible to eliminate.

Also, as the mother's stomach expands during pregnancy, muscles become damaged and the skin becomes loosened. Pregnancy can also lead to the lateral sections of the abdominal muscles being torn. This leads to the person's stomach sticking out, regardless of how slim they are. There is no amount of exercise that can repair this damage. A surgical procedure like a tummy tuck is needed as the adnominal muscles need to be stitched back together.

While each mommy makeover is customized for each patient's individual needs, it typically involves liposuction, a breast lift, breast augmentation and a tummy tuck. Patients are advised to talk freely during their consultations so that the doctor knows what the problem areas they want to eliminate are.
