Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationSchaumburg, IL

Breast augmentation can be used for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes. It is a plastic surgery procedure that makes it possible for patients to improve the appearance of their breasts by making them fuller and bigger. The procedure is also commonly used to reconstruct the breasts of patients who have had a mastectomy to deal with breast cancer.

The two common types of breast implants are saline and silicone.

Saline breast implants are silicone shells that are filled up with sterile saline (salt water) solution. Some come pre-filled by the manufacturer, while others are filled up during the operation. Silicone breast implants also have shells that are made out of silicone. But, instead of a saline solution, they are filled with a plastic gel (silicone). A large number of patients say silicone breast implants feel more natural than their saline counterparts, but they do pose a greater health risk if the implant ruptures.

Both types of implants are available in various sizes and they can have textured or smooth shells. Other things people who are considering implants should know include:

  • Implants do not prevent breasts from sagging. A different procedure called a breast lift is needed to eliminate sagging breasts.
  • Implants have an average lifespan of 10 years
  • Changes to the patient's body as they put on or lose weight might change the appearance of the patient's breast. This can lead to the need for more surgery.
  • Having breast implants makes certain medical procedures, like mammograms, more complicated
  • Implants might inhibit a patient's ability to breastfeed children. Each patient has a unique experience with their implants. Some are able to breastfeed with no problems after getting breast augmentation, while others might find it challenging.
  • Breast augmentation is typically not covered by insurance companies. Patients should be prepared to cover the costs of the procedure.
  • Patients might need additional surgery if they ever get their implant removed. For example, a breast lift might be needed to restore the appearance of the breasts.
  • An MRI scan might be needed from time to time. The FDA advises to regularly monitor implants after three years. However, some studies indicate regular screening is not necessary unless the patient is showing signs that indicate something is wrong.

What to expect when getting breast augmentation

A woman's breasts can continue to develop into her early twenties. Thus, the FDA requires that patients be at least 18 years old before getting saline-filled breast implants and 22 for silicone implants.

The procedure is typically performed by a surgeon who has years of surgical training and experience performing plastic surgery.

The doctor will evaluate the patient during their initial consultation. They will ask about their medical history and any current issues they are dealing with. The doctor will also talk to the patient about any medications they are taking and their alcohol and tobacco use. The patient might be asked to stop taking some drugs prior to the surgery.

Breast augmentation can be done as an outpatient procedure, but some patients do have to be hospitalized overnight. During the start of the surgery, a general anesthetic will be administered. This keeps the patient unconscious throughout the process, making it pain-free.

The surgeon will then make a cut underneath the patient's arms, under their breast or around their nipples. The patient's body type and how much augmentation is being done often determines where the surgeon makes the incision.

The implant is then placed in a pocket below or above the patient's chest muscle. Once the implant is properly positioned, the surgeon will close up the incision with surgical tape or sutures.

      Recovering from breast augmentation

The patient's breasts will be covered with gauze right after the surgery. Drainage tubes might be placed on them as well to minimize fluid accumulation. The tubes are typically removed after a few days. The patient might be advised to wear a surgical bra during the recovery stage.

As is the case with recovery after any surgical procedure, the patient will have to take things easy for a few days after the treatment. Patients should refrain from strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least six weeks after the surgery.

Over-the-counter pain medication can be used to alleviate the discomfort. The doctor might also prescribe additional pain medication. Most patients will deal with some swelling around the site of the surgery. The swelling and scars from the surgery will fade away over time.

      Life after breast augmentation

Breast augmentation can improve the shape and size of a patient's breasts. This typically improves the patient's self-esteem and body image. Still, it is best to have realistic expectations and not seek perfection.

The patient's breast will continue to grow after getting the procedure. This can alter the appearance of their breast over time. Patients who become dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts might need more surgery to correct the problems.

Other benefits of breast implants include:

    • To address micromastia: This occurs when a woman's breasts fail to develop as they should after puberty. It can lead to low self-esteem and constantly feeling conscious about their appearance. Implants can be used to give such women a fuller figure, thus improving their self-image
    • To treat gynecomastia: This condition leads to the formation of fatty breast tissues in males. Breast augmentation can reduce the size of such a patient's breasts, thus improving their appearance. Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen. Liposuction is also used to deal with this condition
    • Creates a more youthful appearance: Breasts lose their volume as a person ages. Breast augmentation can be combined with other treatments, like a breast lift, to provide a perkier appearance
    • It can help recovery after a mastectomy: Women or men who have battled with breast cancer can restore the appearance of their chest with breast reconstruction surgery. The process is more complicated for such patients since it involves other procedures, like the construction of the nipple-areola area and skin grafting
