Brazilian Butt LiftSchaumburg, IL

A Brazilian butt lift is used to improve the way your buttocks look. It consists of removing excess skin and fat from your backside, giving it a more toned looked. It helps to eliminate the saggy appearance that develops in the buttocks as you get older.

The Brazilian butt lift procedure can be performed on its own or combined with other treatments. The additional treatments a doctor might decide to go with often depends on the issues the patient is dealing with.

Brazilian butt lifts do not increase the size of the patient's backside in any way. Other procedures like augmentation with fat grafts or implants have to be performed to change the shape or size of the buttocks.

Why get a Brazilian butt lift?

There are a number of reasons why a person might need a butt lift to improve the way their buttocks look. As mentioned earlier, skin becomes looser as a person ages and that leads to saggy buttocks. Weight fluctuations and sun damage can also lead to the skin on a person's butt becoming looser.

Typical candidates for a butt lift are:

  • People who are healthy and free of chronic conditions, like diabetes or heart disease
  • Non-smokers
  • People who want to improve the tone of their buttocks
  • Those with a body mass index lower than 32
  • People who have lost a lot of weight and have successfully kept it off for over a year
  • People who are free of mental disorders
  • What to expect when getting a Brazilian butt lift

Here is what occurs after a patient informs the doctor they are interested in a butt lift:

  • The doctor will go over the person's medical history, asking about past and current medical conditions. If the person's desire for a butt lift is related to their weight loss goals, then the doctor will ask questions about their progress and diet
  • A physical examination will be performed. The doctor will also examine the patient's buttocks and their skin. Pictures might be taken for medical records
  • The doctor will talk to the patient about their expectations. They will educate the patient about the benefits and potential risks
  • Depending on what the doctor discovers during the initial consultation, the patient might be asked to:

  • Refrain from smoking tobacco products: Smoking decreases blood flow in the skin and slows down healing. It also drastically increases the odds of complications developing. Patients who smoke will be advised to stop smoking before the butt lift and during the recovery process
  • Stop taking certain medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and some herbal supplements can lead to increased bleeding
  • Maintain their weight: Ideally, patients should be able to maintain a stable weight for at least a year before their butt lift. Significant weight loss after getting a Brazilian butt lift can ruin the results of the treatment
  • Make arrangements for help during the recovery process: The patient will need someone to drive them back home and take care of them as they recover
  • The procedure

A Brazilian butt lift is usually performed in an outpatient facility or a hospital. A general anesthetic is administered during the start of the procedure, rendering the patient unconscious. A tube – called a catheter – is then placed into the patient's bladder to collect urine. The patient's legs are placed in sequential compression boots. This helps to prevent blood clots during and after the surgery.

The surgery starts with the surgeon making an incision along the patient's lower back, going from one hip to the other. Any excess skin below the incision is pulled upwards, lifting up the patient's buttocks. The excess fat and skin are then removed. The entire procedure usually takes somewhere between two to five hours. The patient is typically given an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection.

Recovering from a Brazilian butt lift

After a butt lift, the patient's incision will be covered up with surgical dressing. A couple of drains might be placed underneath the area to drain any excess fluid or blood. Walking as early as the first day after getting a Brazilian butt lift helps to prevent blood clots.

Patients will feel some pain after the procedure and that is usually managed with intravenous pain medication. Drains might be left in place for a few weeks after surgery due to the important role they play. The doctor will educate the patient on how to properly empty and clean drains.

Most patients will continue taking antibiotics and anticoagulants after the procedure. The patient will also wear a supportive garment that provides additional support and helps to prevent fluid buildup as they heal. Massages, scar creams and silicone sheeting can be used to manage any scars left by the incision.

Patients need to take things easy for the first few weeks after getting their butt lift. Doctors recommend slowly increasing activity and avoiding activities and positions that strain the incision line. This lowers the risk of the wound reopening.
