liposuction Schaumburg, IL

People of all ages, shapes and sizes may consider liposuction treatment because it can significantly improve one’s overall appearance. However, it is important to understand that not everyone is a candidate for this common procedure.

Those considering liposuction may want to read on to find out whether they may be an eligible candidate. Ultimately, it is a good idea to consult with a doctor and plastic surgeon for an individual evaluation. In the meantime, this overview of appropriate candidates for a liposuction procedure can be a good place to start.

Recommended candidates for liposuction procedures

Read on to find out who is a good candidate for liposuction.

Healthy individuals

One of the most important criteria for having a liposuction procedure is that the individual must be healthy. A good candidate will have a good health history with few to no significant problems. The number one thing that doctors look at is whether the individual has any conditions that may prevent or delay healing

Liposuction does require a significant period of healing in which the body must adapt to the changes. If an individual has any serious conditions or life-threatening illnesses, they may not be a good candidate for the procedure.

30% of ideal weight

Liposuction candidates should also be within 30% of their ideal weight. Individuals who want drastic weight changes may not benefit from liposuction as it is not a procedure intended for removing major amounts of fat. Plastic surgeons may recommend other types of procedures if the individual is not within  30% of their ideal weight. Liposuction is generally most effective when removing minor amounts of excess poundage.

Skin condition

It is important that the individual considering liposuction has good skin. Good skin should be firm and elastic-like. People who have poor skin due to tanning or a lack of care may not be good candidates because their skin may not heal properly after the procedure is complete. It is also necessary for good muscle tone to be present so that when healing takes place, the skin surrounding the muscles can adapt easily.

Plastic surgery requires a thorough evaluation of the individual's skin because so much of it can be affected during the procedure. Muscle tone and skin condition will be closely examined before the liposuction is performed.

Non-smokers

A good candidate for any surgical procedure, liposuction included, should not smoke. Smoking tobacco products can complicate the healing process for a lot of procedures. Patients may be recommended to quit before undergoing the procedure.
