Breast Augmentation

What to Expect During a Breast Augmentation Consultation

Deciding to get breast augmentation is an important decision that impacts the way your breasts will feel and look moving forward. It is best for patients to be as informed as possible about the procedure and what it entails prior to making a decision. Patients should also have realistic expectations about what they hope to accomplish.

During the treatment, implants are inserted into the patient's chest muscles or breast tissues. It can be used to increase the shape and fullness of a person's breast. Breast augmentation can also be used to decrease the size of the patient's breast, especially if they are causing other issues like lower back pain.

Breast augmentation is also used for reconstructive purposes. It can be used to reduce the size of male breasts or to reconstruct the breasts of women who have had a mastectomy as a result of breast cancer.

What goes on during a breast augmentation consultation

The plastic surgeon will provide a consultation that can last up to an hour. During this appointment, the doctor will answer the patient's questions and talk to them about their expectations. The surgeon will also:

  • Review the patient's medical history. This doctor will talk to the person about any major issues they have had in the past, and if they have chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Patients need to be healthy and free of chronic issues to be eligible for the procedure
  • Evaluate how healthy the patient is
  • Measure the patient's breasts. Pictures might also be taken for before and after comparisons
  • Discuss the variances between silicone and saline implants. Saline implants are filled with a saline solution, while silicone implants are filled with silicone. Saline implants are generally viewed as the safer option, but many say silicone implants feel more natural
  • Discuss the properties of teardrop-shaped implants compared to round ones
  • Go over the details of the procedure
  • Show the patient where they plan to make the incision. Many doctors will allow the patient to select the spot they are most comfortable with. The incision can be made underneath the arms, around the nipples or at the sides
  • Talk to the patient about the recovery process
  • Discuss the costs of the treatment
  • Talk to the patient about their tobacco and alcohol use
  • Talk to the patient about other treatments breast augmentation can be combined with, like a breast lift. Breast augmentation on its own does not address issues like saggy breasts
  • Show the patient a projection of what their breasts will look like after the surgery

Patients should bring photos that illustrate the type of breast sizes and results they want. The doctor might also give the patient implant samples they can insert underneath their bra to help them decide which size is best for them.
