What to Expect After a Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Schaumburg, IL

When researching the rhinoplasty process, it is important to understand what to expect after the procedure to ensure a successful outcome. When you have reconstructive nose surgery (rhinoplasty), the recovery process varies depending on the patient and the extent of their surgery. The main goal is to ensure the nose heals properly and retains its shape and appearance so that you may receive your ideal results. In this article, we will cover postoperative tips that will help you have an overall successful procedure.

6 Things to expect after a Rhinoplasty

Recovery Timeline

As with any surgery, the patient will need to avoid Aspirin and other blood-thinning medications contradicting the rhinoplasty. Though this varies on the patient’s medical history and current needs, the doctor may ask them temporarily stop taking daily medications.

The length of recovery depends on the type of rhinoplasty the patient has undergone. For those undergoing a closed rhinoplasty, recovery usually lasts between three to six weeks. During this time, the patient needs to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully to avoid unsatisfactory results or complications like bleeding or infection. It is worth noting every patient’s expected recovery timeline will be different based on factors including age, lifestyle, and medical history.

Packing or splints

Packing reduces swelling and bleeding, which we will remove after a few days, and while not painful, it can be uncomfortable. However, sometimes packing is unnecessary, and the doctor may use soft splints. The soft splints make breathing easy for the patient because they have holes at the top of them. Whichever option the doctor chooses, they will remove them at the one-week follow-up appointment.

Pain and discomfort

Pain and discomfort are normal symptoms and are expected after the procedure, which is why some doctors choose to use local anesthesia, while others may choose general anesthesia. To keep patients comfortable during their recovery, the doctor will prescribe a pain medication that should be taken as directed. The surgeon will send the patient (or caregiver) home with proper pain management instructions and what to do if the patient experiences an emergency.

Additionally, patients may find it beneficial to use ice packs on each side of their nose for 30 minutes every hour for the first two days. In addition to the prescribed pain medications, patients may also want to keep over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol. However, make sure to receive the doctor’s approval before consuming them.

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising are normal side effects after rhinoplasty, but they will eventually do away. It is important to remember that some swelling can occur for two weeks or longer. Bruising may last up to three weeks. Patients should avoid activities that may cause pain in the nasal area for at least ten days after the procedure.

Activities to avoid during recovery

In order to avoid disappointment, it is important to know what activities a patient should avoid during the recovery period. It is recommended that patients refrain from strenuous physical activities or contact sports until receiving the doctor’s approval. We also recommend that patients take baths instead of showers to avoid putting pressure on their noses for at least two weeks after the surgery.

In addition, patients should avoid smoking and alcohol consumption because they can cause extreme complications following a rhinoplasty—namely, irritation in the nasal area and increased bleeding. Additionally, patients should avoid spicy foods should immediately after the rhinoplasty; they can irritate the sensitive skin around and inside the patient’s nose. In turn, consuming spicy foods can make the recovery process more difficult than necessary.

Follow-up appointments

Follow-up appointments are almost always recommended. The doctor will want to see the patient within a week after the procedure to remove the packing or splints and ensure they are properly healing. It is normal for the patient still to experience swelling or bruising during their secondary appointment. However, if the patient is experiencing excessive pain, bleeding, or swelling beyond the recommended timeframe, they should immediately call our office to schedule an appointment.

In conclusion

With the right information, you can recover smoothly after rhinoplasty and return to normal activities with your dream results. Remember, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions after surgery and care for yourself properly so that you may heal properly. We hope you have found this article helpful.
