If you’re interested in undergoing a Tummy Tuck procedure, you may already know about the benefits of this popular surgery. A Tummy Tuck allows a plastic surgeon to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal walls; this fat is typically hard to lose as a result of pregnancy, weight loss/gain, or the aging process.
The ultimate goal of the Tummy Tuck is to flatten the stomach, which makes it easier for patients to fit into their clothing. A Tummy Tuck is an excellent choice for patients who may have had a hard time toning the tummy, despite a consistent diet and exercise regimen.
Patients who are undergoing a Tummy Tuck should have strong support at home to help with the recovery process. The Tummy Tuck is a major abdominal surgery that involves significant recovery, especially if the patient undergoes a Full Tummy Tuck (a Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on repairing the lower abdominal walls). In general, the recovery time for a full Tummy Tuck is about four weeks; a Mini Tummy Tuck takes about two weeks, as it’s not as major of a surgery.
During this time, you’ll need plenty of assistance at home, as you won’t be able to lift objects or do strenuous exercise. Additionally, you’ll want to avoid any other activities that could strain your incision. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort during the first few weeks after surgery.
Some patients may undergo a Liposuction procedure at the same time as the Tummy Tuck, as the latter only focuses on the abdomen and hips (nothing is done to the waist). The combined procedures are best for patients who want a more contoured stomach but are having trouble losing stubborn fat around the abdominal wall. Liposuction usually won’t extend the recovery time, as the procedures are performed at the same time.
Most patients can start doing normal activities – with some restrictions – after four weeks; however, final results may not be seen for up to six months. To learn more about what to expect from your Tummy Tuck recovery, schedule a consultation at the Schaumburg, IL practice of Paul C. Dillon, MD.
