What Is the Process of Getting Laser Hair Removal?

Are you tired of shaving and waxing? Laser hair removal is a long-term and effective way to remove unwanted body hair. A minimally invasive procedure, laser treatments can remove upper lip hair, arm hair, leg hair, and other types of body hair in just a few appointments. This blog will cover the process, aftercare guidelines, and everything you need to know about laser hair removal.

What is laser hair removal?

As its name suggests, laser hair removal removes unwanted hair by damaging hair follicles with a laser. Typically, it feels like being snapped with a rubber band. If needed, a numbing gel can be applied to ease the discomfort.

While not permanent, the results of laser hair removal can last from months to years. It is worth noting that the laser works best on people with dark hair and pale skin. Most people report that when their hair grew back after laser, it grew thinner and fairer. These are just some of the many benefits in addition to the following:

  • Precise hair removal
  • No risk of ingrown hairs
  • Safe, quick, and noninvasive procedure
  • Low maintenance (no need for waxing or shaving)
  • Relatively painless compared to waxing and other methods

The risks associated with laser removal are minimal. Redness, swelling, and minor skin irritation can be expected for a few hours after the procedure. There is also the possibility of permanently lightening or darkening the skin. It is possible to reduce these risks with proper preparation, attentive aftercare, and by going to an established medspa with experienced and licensed practitioners.

The consultation process

A consultation is the first step in the laser hair removal process. The client will be asked where and how much hair they would like removed and given the opportunity to ask questions about the procedure. During the consultation, the provider will also:

  • Determine eligibility (e.g., look over medical history, allergies, etc.)
  • Manage the client’s expectations
  • Discuss the benefits of laser removal
  • Inform the client of the potential risks
  • Address concerns about the process

Instructing the client on preparing for their laser appointment is another important component of the consultation process. They will also review how many laser treatments will be needed to achieve the desired result.

Preparing for laser hair removal

Before laser hair removal, the patient will need to properly prepare in order to promote good results and prevent negative side effects. The client will be given detailed, personalized instructions at their consultation. However, all clients should take the following steps to prepare for the first appointment:

Shave and trim the area, but do not wax or pluck it

Waxing and plucking remove the hair from the follicles, so avoiding these methods for six weeks before laser treatment is best. However, since shaving only trims the hair, shaving the day or night before the appointment is recommended. This preparation will also reduce pain and discomfort; the laser will burn away any remaining stubble.

Limit sun exposure

Keep the area out of direct sunlight before laser hair removal. If it must be exposed (such as the upper lip), wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen at least SPF 30. Make sure to avoid using skin-darkening products.

Do not take blood thinners

Blood-thinning medication, from aspirin to prescribed anticoagulants, puts the client at risk for bleeding during laser hair removal. While the risk is low, it is best to avoid it altogether. Consult a doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.

The day of the appointment

Upon arrival on the day of the appointment, the client will be given protective eyewear to shield the eyes from the laser. The area may be shaved once again to ensure the absence of stubble. During this time, a numbing gel can be applied if necessary.

The laser used to remove hair is a handheld laser pressed onto the skin. Sometimes, a cooling device or gel is used to reduce the potential for side effects. When the laser is activated, the beam passes through hair follicles, damaging them and hindering hair growth. As mentioned, the sensation may feel like a rubberband being snapped against the skin. The length of the appointment will depend on the size of the treated area.

Aftercare guidelines

The medspa will provide care guidelines between appointments and after the final laser hair removal session. The goal is to protect the skin from further damage and reduce discomfort. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 on the treated area and avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Again, do not use skin-darkening products or tanning beds during or immediately after laser treatment. It may be recommended to ice the area to reduce discomfort, redness, and swelling.
