What Is an Eyelid Lift?

eyelid lift Schaumburg, IL

You may have heard of an eyelid lift, but what do you know about this cosmetic procedure? Adults of all ages have enjoyed the results this surgery can produce. If you are not happy with the way your face and eyes look, this could be a good option. Your doctor will have the knowledge and training to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

An overview of an eyelid lift

Plastic surgeons and other medical professionals are accustomed to helping people feel good about their appearance. Often, visible signs of aging can take a toll on a person’s skin, especially in the face. The eyelids can bear the brunt of wear and tear. An eyelid lift, also known as a blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and fat to repair droopy eyelids. This procedure can take sagging skin and tighten it up to give a person a more youthful look. This surgery can also improve an individual’s vision.

Before the procedure

The doctor will first visit with the prospective patient before doing an eyelid lift. The doctor and individual will discuss the surgery and whether it makes sense. There will be a review of the person’s medical history, including current medications the patient takes and whether any other eye conditions exist. The doctor will conduct a physical examination, focusing on the eyes. Lastly, the doctor will take pictures of the person’s eyes. All of these steps will help the doctor plan the surgery and recovery for the patient.

How the surgery works

This is an outpatient procedure, but the patient should arrange for someone else to help with transportation. The doctor will start by numbing the surgical site so that the patient feels comfortable. The surgeon then makes an incision on the upper eyelid, removing skin, muscle and fat. After closing the incision, the doctor then moves to the lower eyelid, cutting below the eyelash. The eyelid lift may involve moving fat and sagging skin to other areas of the eyelids.

Recovering from the surgery

Once the doctor finishes the eyelid lift, the patient will rest for a few hours in a recovery room. During this time, the staff will monitor the person, checking vital signs. Once the doctor feels good about the patient’s condition, the individual will go home. There are possible side effects such as sensitivity to light, blurry vision, puffy eyes and swelling and watery eyes.

Follow-up and results

After a week or two, the swelling should go down. The doctor will follow up to review the person’s progress and address any concerns. Many patients enjoy a younger look for the rest of their life.

Turn back the clock

You cannot reduce your age, but you can do something about saggy skin around your eyes. An eyelid lift can be an effective way to improve your appearance. This may help you have more self-esteem and feel better about being in social situations. If you are interested in this surgery, contact a doctor near you.
