What Is a Facelift Procedure?

facelift Schaumburg, IL

A facelift procedure is also known as rhytidectomy. It is a cosmetic surgery that can give you a more youthful-looking face. During the procedure, excess skin is removed. One of the most common types of facelifts can remove loose skin around the jaws. This skin is also called “jowls.”

What is a facelift?

Patients who have creases around the nose and mouth may opt for a facelift to remove it. Hanging skin in the neck or chin can also be removed. However, this is not the only thing that happens during this procedure. The cosmetic surgeon can also tighten the tissues under the skin. This can enhance areas such as the eyelids, forehead, cheeks and brows.

One study showed that more than 107,000 women chose to get a facelift in 2016 alone. Fewer than 14,000 men chose this procedure. However, it was still the fifth most common type of cosmetic surgery for men. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis.

Patients who are getting a facelift will usually receive local anesthesia. However, some may choose to receive general anesthesia. Usually, the total procedure time is somewhere between two to five hours. The timing of the surgery will depend on what procedures are being done. However, a patient can usually go home on the same day and rest.

The facelift procedure

Every facelift is different. However, the surgeon will usually make a small cut at the front of the ear. The cut may extend into the hairline or behind the ear. The surgeon can then lift this skin and remove the extra skin. While the patient is under, the surgeon may also tighten the facial tissues as well.

Some patients may also choose to have their neck tightened. The surgeon will cut the skin under the chin to access the deeper layer of the skin. The surgeon can tighten this area and remove the excess tissues. At the end of the procedure, the surgeon will close the area with sutures. Sometimes, the patient will have a drain behind the ear to remove any blood.

Recovering from a facelift

After surgery, a patient may experience some discomfort. However, the patient will have received pain medications to help manage this. A patient may have some swelling or bruising. But the patient can wear a natural-looking concealer to help cover the appearance of the bruises. Rest after surgery is very important.

Usually, a cosmetic surgeon will allow a patient to bathe after the surgery, although carefully. Sometimes, the area will need to be kept dry. This means that patients may have to wait a few days before washing their hair again. The cosmetic surgeon will give the patient instructions and it is important to follow all of them.
