What are the Different Types of Breast Augmentation?

breast augmentation Schaumburg, IL

A woman who wants breast augmentation surgery can easily get lost in the mountain of information that is out there. It is hard to know where to start, let alone form a clear picture of what goes into breast augmentation.

The best place to start is with the basics.

What exactly is breast augmentation surgery?

It is the surgical insertion of breast implants into the breasts, with the goal of increasing their size. An added advantage of breast augmentation is a marked improvement in the shape and perkiness of the patient's breasts.

The process of placing breast implants is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. As an example, two different women can have incisions of different sizes and at different parts of the breasts. The two women could also choose implants of different materials, shapes and textures.

This makes for lots of information to unpack, such as the surgical techniques used to perform breast augmentation.

The different ways that breast augmentation surgery is done

A surgeon must make an incision in order to insert the breast implant. The surgeon could choose to make the incision in different places, depending on different factors. For example:

  1. A surgeon could choose to make the incision near the areola. They would choose this option if the patient chooses a silicone implant and a breast lift. An upside of this incision is that it is easily camouflaged by the dark pigment of the areola
  2. A surgeon could make the incision in the crease of the breast. This is the incision that is most popular with plastic surgeons. Its position allows easy access to the breast. Also, the scar from this incision is hard to spot
  3. Sometimes, a surgeon might access the breast through an incision in the armpit or near the belly button. These incisions can only be used to insert deflated saline implants, which are filled once they are in place. Cosmetic surgeons tend to avoid these types of incisions whenever they can

Types of breast implants

Breast implants are categorized in different ways. An implant can be described by the material it is made of. For example:

  • Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. A surgeon will fill the implants once they are inserted into the breast. This type of implant only requires a small incision
  • Silicone implants are filled with silicone, a biocompatible material that mimics the consistency of fatty tissue. A surgeon will need to make a larger cut in order to insert the implant
  • Gummy bear implants are a firmer version of silicone implants. They have the consistency of gummy bears, hence their name

Implants can also be described by their shape. Some implants are round. Others have what is known as an anatomical shape, which means that they have more volume on their lower ends. Just like most natural breasts.

Implants can also have different textures. Some implants are smooth while others are rough. Implants with a rough surface are more likely to stay in place compared to the smooth ones.
