Understanding Liposuction Techniques From a Plastic Surgeon
Liposuction is a surgical solution for losing stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. Though not a weight loss treatment, this procedure can help patients get closer to their ideal body and tone up those last stubborn sections. However, those considering this procedure should work with a qualified plastic surgeon and know what to expect.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which a plastic surgeon makes an incision in the treatment area. They can then suction fat from certain areas of the body, such as the upper arms, tummy, buttocks, hips, and thighs. The goal is to refine and reshape areas not responding to diet and exercise. The typical amount of fat removed is usually 10 pounds or less. Liposuction does not typically reduce the appearance of cellulite or remove large amounts of excessive fat. Instead, patients can use liposuction to complement their regular weight loss efforts.
Liposuction Techniques
Plastic surgeons use several different liposuction techniques. These methods involve using a thin tube called a cannula connected to a vacuum that suctions the fat from the treatment area. Here are some of the most common methods plastic surgeons use.
Tumescent liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is the most common liposuction procedure and involves injecting the fatty areas with a special solution that usually exceeds the amount of fat that needs to be removed. This solution contains saline and medicines that reduce pain and blood loss and make the fat easier to remove. The plastic surgeon then sucks out the solution with the fat. Patients need to know that tumescent liposuction typically takes longer than other types.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction(UAL)
This method employs sound wave energy under the skin that liquefies the fat, making it easier to suction out. The ultrasound can be applied above the skin's surface with a special emitter or below it using a small heated cannula. UAL is often used with other methods for more precision and is effective for treating fibrous fat.
Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL)
For this method, the surgeon inserts a laser fiber through a small incision in the treatment area. This laser liquefies the fat to ease removal. The tubes used for this liposuction are much smaller, making it better for areas of the body such as the neck or chin. In addition, the laser can help stimulate collagen, reducing prost procedure sagging.
Things to consider
Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, patients should work with an experienced plastic surgeon who can keep risks to a minimum and handle any potential complications. Ideal candidates are in good health and nonsmokers. Patients may have to take three days to up to two weeks off work for the recovery period and longer for those with physically demanding jobs. Resuming regular activities, including exercise, can take up to a month and a half.
