Quick Guide to Tummy Tuck Surgery

If you want a firm and flat stomach, a tummy tuck surgery might be in order. This surgery can reshape and tighten your stomach so that you can look slimmer. Find out more about this surgery, so you will know what to expect if you decide to move forward.

Types of tummy tucks

Plastic surgeons evaluate patients to determine which type of tummy tuck surgery is the right fit. The surgeon looks at the stomach area and talks to the patient about desired outcomes before recommending a procedure.

Full tummy tuck

People who have excess skin and fat above and below their belly buttons can benefit from a full tummy tuck. The plastic surgeon makes an incision above the patient’s pubic mound. The surgeon removes the excess skin and then tightens the muscles to make the stomach appear flat and slim.

If there is a lot of excess skin around the belly button, the surgeon will make a second incision to remove it. Even with a second incision, the scars are usually not visible when bikini bottoms are on.

Mini tummy tuck

Some people have a pooch and excess skin below their belly buttons. They usually require a mini tummy tuck to fix this issue. The surgeon makes an incision above the pubic mound and removes the excess skin. The surgeon also tightens the muscles to flatten the pooch.

The scar from this procedure is small and easy to hide.

Extended tummy tuck

People who have lost a large amount of weight are often burdened with sagging skin. This can also occur after pregnancy. In both cases, an extended tummy tuck can help. The surgeon must make a large incision to remove the excess skin and tighten muscles in the lower and upper abdomen and the flanks. In many cases, the scar can be hidden with a swimsuit.

Recovering from a tummy tuck

For the first week after plastic surgery, patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and soreness. Patients are encouraged to use ice packs to alleviate the swelling and discomfort. Patients are also sent home with pain medication.

Patients need to change their bandages and clean the surgical site each day. This is needed in the first four weeks after the tummy tuck surgery.

People should rest as much as possible during the first week after surgery and they should not engage in any vigorous activity for four to six weeks.

The soreness should begin to subside by the second week of recovery. While some swelling will still be present, it will go down quite a bit by the second week.

After four weeks, people usually feel back to normal. Light exercise is generally allowed at this point. Patients follow up with their plastic surgeons who will soon allow them to resume normal activities without restrictions.
