Quick Guide to Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck surgery is something you might be considering. If you are interested in a firmer, flatter abdomen that helps your body’s contour, then a tummy tuck may be the right answer for you. It can help you improve the shape of your abdomen.

FAQs about a tummy tuck surgery

Before a patient undergoes a tummy tuck, it is important that they know all the facts. Learn the different questions that people might ask of a plastic surgeon before the surgery itself.

What cosmetic purpose does it serve?

A tummy tuck surgery is performed to improve a patient’s lower abdomen region. A patient may have loose and excessive skin or lax abdominal muscles that the plastic surgeon can help with. Sometimes, a doctor can remove deposits of fat in or around the abdomen.

What does a tummy tuck involve?

Doctors will tailor the procedure to each patient’s specific goals and needs. A tummy tuck will usually involve the doctor tightening the muscles of the patient’s abdomen. The doctor will remove excess skin and may use liposuction to get rid of unwanted fat.

For a full tummy tuck, the doctor will make an incision low on the abdomen, from one side of the hip to the other. The incision for a mini tummy tuck will also be low on the abdomen, so it is less noticeable. A mini tummy tuck incision is shorter in length. Depending on the extent of work a patient needs and the doctor’s technique, the operation can take two to four hours.

What are the differences between a mini and full tummy tuck?

When a patient gets a mini or full tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon will focus on tightening the abdominal muscles and removing extra skin. The difference between these two types is that a full tummy tuck is usually used so that a doctor can rejuvenate the areas both below and above the patient’s belly button. A mini tummy tuck will usually focus on the patient’s lower abdomen that is beneath the belly button.

What is the recovery process?

The drain tubes a doctor uses will need to be left in place after the tummy tuck for around one week. Patients should walk around after the surgery once they feel comfortable.

Following a tummy tuck, a patient may feel mild or moderate discomfort. Doctors may recommend or prescribe pain management medication. Patients may also experience some swelling or bruising. These symptoms typically go away after a couple of weeks. Most people can return to non-strenuous activities and jobs after one or two weeks. Heavy lifting and physical labor should be avoided for at least six or eight weeks.

How noticeable are the scars?

The doctor will make the tummy tuck incisions low on the patient’s abdomen, near the pubic region. Patients can conceal these scars when dressing — even in bathing suits and with some types of underwear.
