However, a person with a relatively smooth neckline may also choose to undergo this procedure to achieve a more elegant look.
If the neck lift is a skin-only one, the plastic surgeon will make two incisions either behind or under the ear. This will loosen the skin. The surgeon will then re-drape it and remove excess skin or fat. If a person wants a skin lift, or platysmaplasty, the surgeon will need to make an additional incision under the chin.
Healthy individuals who have saggy or loose skin around the neck, or whose necks are fleshy, are good candidates for this procedure. However, patients should always consult with a primary care doctor before undergoing any type of cosmetic surgery procedure.
Every person is different, and post-operative recovery will look different for everyone. However, most neck lift patients experience slight swelling around the site of surgery and throughout the lower face for a couple of days. The pain and swelling should peak at around three days and then begin to go down from there.
The typical recovery period for neck surgery is between two to four weeks. However, so long as a person’s job does not entail heavy lifting or straining the neck, it may be possible to return to work after just three or four days.
A few different factors play into the longevity of neck lift results. A person’s skincare routine and lifestyle choices may influence how long the results last, as will the natural aging process. Most neck surgery results last as many as 10 to 15 years.
Every surgery has the potential for complications, and a neck lift is no different. A surgeon has the responsibility to inform patients of the risks, which include infection, allergic reaction to the anesthesia, lumpiness, mottling of the skin, hematoma or seroma, cording, numbness, asymmetry and overall dissatisfaction with the results. However, when a person goes to a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon, complications are rare.
Neck lifts, when done right, can dramatically improve one’s appearance. If you are interested in the procedure, do some research ahead of time and bring any questions to the plastic surgeon to ensure it is right for you.
