How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

People decide to get laser hair removal for a wide variety of reasons. Some people do it because they lead busy lives and do not have time to shave as often as they would like. Others opt for hair removal to eliminate ingrown hairs, which are often unsightly and even painful. Others simply enjoy the confidence boost that often comes with removing unwanted hair. Regardless of the personal reasons behind deciding to book a laser hair appointment, there are several things people can do to get ready for their big day under the laser.

4 tips to prepare for hair removal

In the weeks and days leading up to a hair removal appointment, the client should do several things to prepare.

1. Avoid plucking or waxing unwanted hairs

When a client removes hair with a laser, the laser works to remove the unwanted hair at its root. For this reason, it is important to stop plucking or waxing the area for at least four weeks before the appointment. Plucking and waxing remove the hair at the root. Using these methods too close to the lasering appointment could mean that not enough of the hair's root is available to accurately and completely remove it with lasers. Typically, laser removal takes several appointments at eight- to 10-week intervals to be effective.

2. Shave a couple of days before the appointment

While a client should not pluck or wax before the appointment, shaving is completely acceptable. Laser hair removal specialists require their clients to shave the area that will be treated 24-48 hours before the appointment. Shaving does not remove the root but does remove longer, unnecessary hair. This makes it easier for the laser to target the pigment of the hair's root beneath the surface of the skin. Shaving is required because it also greatly decreases the chances that the laser will burn the skin while trying to get to the root of the hair.

3. Do not spend time in the sun

For at least two weeks before the lasering appointment, the client should avoid spending time in direct sunlight or spending any time in UV tanning beds. Self-tanners should be avoided as well. Even a mild sunburn can cause severe pain after a lasering appointment, so it is important to use a minimum of SPF 30 when outside. Additionally, UV tanning or self-tanning lotions can lead to discoloration after the treatment.

4. Show up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed

On the day of the appointment, the client should shower as normal but avoid using any lotions, oils, or fragrances after the shower. Coming to the appointment clean and without any makeup on helps to ensure that the laser removal process works as intended and that there is no discoloration or other unwanted side effects.

Conclusion

When performed by a professional, laser hair removal may provide stunning results that leave clients feeling happier, more confident, and more beautiful. Talk to a specialist to learn more.
