How Long Does the Laser Hair Removal Process Take?
Laser hair removal may offer the exciting possibility of never shaving, plucking, or waxing again. Some patients have tried this treatment and have been free of unwanted hair for years. When it does grow back, hair appears finer, more sparse, and lighter in color. However, if you are considering laser hair removal, it is important to note the time involved and the factors affecting how this treatment will work for you.
How treatment works
Laser hair removal is a procedure that varies depending on the type of laser used and the area treated. However, the basic procedure involves the doctor using a handheld instrument to target the hair follicles under the skin. The laser heat is intended to damage the hair follicles and interfere with hair growth. Patients must undergo several sessions for the most effective results, each spaced weeks apart.
Though this treatment can work for people with many skin and hair types, it tends to be best suited to those with light skin and dark hair. Risks and side effects tend to be mild or uncommon and are influenced by the nature of the treatment area and an individual patient’s characteristics. Proper preparation and aftercare are also important for safe and effective treatment.
Length of treatment
The time needed for each session is determined by the size and nature of the treatment area, among other factors. For example, someone having their upper lip or chin area treated may only require five to 10-minute sessions. However, larger areas of the legs may take 30 minutes to an hour or even longer.
Another factor to consider is whether or not a patient chooses to receive numbing gel. Though this procedure is not associated with much discomfort, there is some. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the sensation has been likened to warm pinpricks, or a rubber band snapped against the skin. Many patients find they quickly get used to the sensation, and it becomes only a mild nuisance. However, options like a numbing gel are available for particularly sensitive patients. It is important to note that the numbing gel can take at least 30 minutes to begin working, adding more time to the session.
Laser hair removal works as a series of treatments, typically ranging from two to six sessions. However, depending on the patient, they may need more sessions to get the desired results. Treatments are usually spaced four to six weeks apart but can be as many as 12 to 16 weeks apart. Therefore, a significant time commitment is required for patients to see significant results.
After the treatment
A key advantage of this treatment is the lack of downtime. Most patients can return to work or their regular activities immediately. Side effects will include mild discomfort, swelling, and redness. These tend to be the most common but fade one to three days after treatment. The practitioner will discuss all the possible side effects with the patient and offer assistance with any issues that may arise post-procedure.
We urge patients to take certain precautions post-procedure to enhance the success of laser hair removal and limit side effects. Patients must avoid direct contact with sunlight on the treated area or any contact with indoor tanning equipment. Cold compresses can usually ease redness and swelling, like one used to treat a mild sunburn.
Other precautions and things to note
We encourage patients to trim or shave the treated area the day before laser treatment and avoid contact with the sun or skin creams that may darken the skin. Other hair removal methods, such as waxing and plucking, must be avoided. Finally, patients should discuss any medications they take with the practitioner before treatment. We advise patients to discontinue using aspirin and other blood-thinning medications.
Each patient experiences results differently. For example, some patients notice about 25% less hair in the treated area after one treatment. However, a full course of treatment leads to maximum results. Though many patients experience months to years of hair-free skin in the treatment area, most will need maintenance treatments to maintain their results.
