How Long Does Lip Augmentation Last?

Wondering whether lip augmentation is a good decision for you? Read on to learn more. If you are not completely happy with the way your lips look, then know that there are a few different types of lip augmentation procedures that may give you the results you want. In order for you to understand whether this procedure is right for you, making a consultation appointment for more information is going to be your next step.

An overview of lip augmentation

Simply put, lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that can give you fuller, plumper lips. Those who have thin lips and would like them to be fuller are who the procedure is for, as many people are born with thin lips or start to experience thinning lips as they begin to age.

How long does lip augmentation last?

One of the more common questions people who are interested in undergoing this procedure ask is how long can they expect the results from the procedure to last. The answer depends on a few different factors, including the type of augmentation they choose, how old the patient is, and whether or not they are having any additional procedures performed at the same time, such as fillers or botulinum toxin injections. While it really does vary when it comes to how long the results of this procedure will last, a general answer is that one can expect the results to last about one year.

Types of lip augmentation procedures and how long each one lasts

Collagen-based fillers are one of the more popular types of fillers used to make one’s lips look fuller. The collagen filler used is either extracted from cows or humans, with the cow-based collagen filler lasting a little longer than the human-based version. While one option does tend to last longer than the other, it is important to understand that there is a higher risk for allergic reactions when choosing the cow-based option. This lip filler option lasts anywhere between three and six months.

Autologous collagen dispersion fillers are fillers that are made using the patient's skin, which means there is no worry about experiencing any type of allergic reaction. This type of filler lasts longer than collagen-based fillers, so those who choose this option can expect this lip filler to last anywhere between six and 12 months.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are an option that contains hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced by the body so that the skin and lips can stay soft and hydrated. As we age, the body starts making less of this substance, which in turn makes it so that the lips begin to look thinner. This type of filler lasts about six months.

Lip augmentation FAQs

It is helpful to ask any questions you have during the consultation visit as well as throughout the entire treatment process. Here are some common questions that patients have about lip augmentation to help you properly prepare.

How long does it take to recover from lip augmentation?

The recovery process may take up to a week. However, swelling should diminish within 48 hours after the procedure. Patients should follow the post-care plans provided by their plastic surgeon. This may include avoiding irritation (e.g., sun or heat exposure to the lip area) and certain dietary limitations.

What are the dos and don'ts after lip augmentation?

Be sure to speak with your plastic surgeon about aftercare instructions following lip augmentation. Generally, the instructions include avoiding anything that may irritate the affected area, such as kissing, applying makeup, or using exfoliating agents. This initial recovery period should only last for 24 to 48 hours before you can begin to return to your normal routine without the risk of compromising the results or causing discomfort.

How long does it take for fillers to settle after lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation results should last approximately nine months to more than a year. However, it can take several weeks and up to a month for the fillers to settle and to achieve the maximum benefit of the lip augmentation. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions to achieve the optimal benefit.
