How Long Does It Take for a Hair Transplant to Work?

There is often a level of confusion among patients as to whether hair transplants actually work. The simplest way to answer this question is to demonstrate the results that we have been able to provide for our patients.

Hair transplants have been a science in progress for many years, but now with innovative modern techniques, we are able to replace hair that has been lost due to male or female pattern baldness.

It's your own hair

Hair transplants use a person’s own hair from different parts of the body that have more abundant hair. This is typically found on the back of the head, which means the hair being replaced is actually the head hair. Hair follicles, in units of one to four individual hairs, are harvested from the back of the head, known as the donor site, and then are carefully transplanted to the area of the skull that has thinning or is bald. Typically, within a period of ten to 12 months, a full ahead of hair becomes clearly visible.

Who is a good candidate?

Many people believe that they may not be a good candidate for hair transplants because they have lost too much hair or not enough. The reality is that most men and women who have male or female pattern baldness are excellent candidates for hair transplants and should make an appointment to discuss this treatment option. Just remember that it is a process and not an instantaneous solution.

A slow process

One of the reasons why there is some confusion around the success or failure of hair transplants is because too many people come in expecting to walk into the clinic bald and leave with a full head of hair. This is not going to happen. Shedding transplanted hair is part of the normal process and is something that every single patient is going to go through. Every hair that has been transplanted needs to go through a process of taking root, growth and shedding. Once the hair that has been transplanted from the donor site to the bald or balding area and has gone through all three of these cycles, then it will be visible. This process typically takes between ten and 12 months.

Setting expectations

It can take patience to wait for the transplants to be successful. It is important that patients understand that while this is an emotional journey eventually, at the end of ten to 12 months, the follicular units will have taken root and will begin to grow just like they did at the original donor sites. Once they have grown properly, a patient will not even remember what it was like to be without hair. Male and female pattern baldness will be a memory and no longer a reality.
