The largest organ of the human body is the skin. It serves many purposes, but its primary function is to protect the internal organs, ligaments and bones from germs and disease. Its three layers each serve a critical purpose in performing its job. The top layer, the epidermis, is the first line of attack against invaders.
It also is the first to start showing the signs of aging. As people age, body systems start to slow down, and the skin is no exception. Vitamins and minerals deplete over time, making the skin appear to sink. The face in particular manifests these depletions in the form of creasing and wrinkling.
Without constant buoyancy and revitalization, the skin starts to wrinkle. Some external forces also play a role in the development of these features of aging:
Juvederm® was created to help combat both internal and external forces that exaggerate the look of creasing on the face. It helps bolster some of the natural elements that deplete over time. The epidermis is held up by some of the features in the second layer, the dermis. These elements include collagen and elastin. The loss of these two natural skin components over time causes the epidermis to sag and sink. The ingredients in the Juvederm® injection can help temporarily restore some of these depleted natural resources.
Some fillers are granular-based, and as such may leave behind a lumpy texture that may even be visible. Juvederm® is different. It is a gel-based compound that when injected under the skin bolsters the areas of the epidermis that have begun to sink. These areas are rejuvenated, and a smoother, younger appearance is achieved.
The most common areas treated with Juvederm® injections are found around the mouth. The lines that appear from the nose to the mouth, commonly known as laugh lines, may be helped by the gel. Other common areas of the face subject to developing wrinkles, like the forehead and the space between the eyes, may also show signs of improvement.
The injections contain a numbing agent to help reduce pain at the injection site. The most common side effects that may occur after treatment include swelling, redness, bumps, pain and firmness. These and other side effects should go away within the first week.
Juvederm® is not a permanent solution and may require a repeat treatment within nine months of the initial round. Depending on the results achieved versus those desired, more frequent treatment may be necessary.
