How Filler Injections are Used

Filler Injections Schaumburg, IL

Sagging skin, wrinkles and other signs of loss-of-volume can make a face look prematurely aged.

However, there are solutions that do not involve face lifts, tucks and other kind of surgery.

Filler injections, sometimes called “injectables,” “dermal fillers,” or even just “having your lips done,” can replace lost volume, help smooth out wrinkles, tighten up sagging skin, and even improve the general shape of the treated area.

How do filler injections work?

Filler injections are FDA approved and can successfully plump up skin in very little time. The treatments do not take long, and recovery is a snap compared to equivalent surgeries.

What do filler injections replace?

Subcutaneous fat, which we often refer to as “baby fat,” disappears as we grow older. This transforms the face from “plump and glowing” to “sagging and hollow,” causing much of the wrinkles we are used to seeing in older folks.

The idea behind filler injections is that they use various safe, FDA-approved substances to replace that subcutaneous fat and retain the youthful, plump appearance of healthy skin. This plumping effect can smooth out wrinkles.

What else can filler injections be used for?

Of course, there are other uses for filler injections:

  • Help repair deformities
  • Improve the contours of the face
  • Thicken and broaden lips
  • Soften the appearance of wrinkles
  • Can improve the look of the eyes by plumping wrinkled areas and decreasing the amount of shadows around the eyes

Whether concerned about the appearance of aging, looking to correct a deformity or trying to smooth out the appearance of a scar, filler injections can perform a great deal of rejuvenation.

Are filler injections safe?

When compared to plastic surgery, filler injections are relatively safe. Any you will get at MedSpa are FDA approved and performed by licensed and qualified technicians who have years of experience.

However, there are always risks associated with any elective treatment. Because filler injections are non-surgical, however, these risks are greatly diminished.

The following issues are unlikely but could result from filler injections. If any of these should occur, they are almost all treatable and/or temporary:

  1. Bleeding or bruising at the location of the injection
  2. Swelling (this will usually go down in short order)
  3. Rashes, redness or itching
  4. An asymmetrical appearance (it is important to wait for the swelling to go down before worrying about this; tissues in the face do not always swell in the exact same proportions)
  5. Acne
  6. Rarely, necrosis from an obstructed blood flow

These are all fairly rare, but remember to talk to your doctor and MedSpa employees to make sure you feel comfortable and safe with the treatment.

Good candidates for filler injections

Filler injections are safe for almost everyone and can be customized based on a client’s needs and other factors like age and skin condition.

Some clients may prefer an “overhaul” treatment of filler injections while others want a smaller amount. Filler injection treatments come in many different mixtures and brands; your specialist can recommend what is right for you based on your medical history and desired results.

Filler injection treatments

The most commonly known filler injection treatment is Botox. This is used to fill in skin volume and smooth wrinkles. It is injected using a superfine needle and lasts three to six months, depending on the injection site. Botox and Botox-type injected solutions are considered best for lines occurring on the face.

Another common filler injection is collagen. Collagen is a naturally occurring substance in the skin and is responsible for skin’s elasticity. It is an active ingredient in Botox but can also be a filler injection on its own. As we naturally express ourselves using facial muscles (frowning, laughing, squinting, etc.), elasticity gets worn down and skin actually uses up volume. Collagen can be a great way to use a natural substance to smooth wrinkles. It is injected into a specific area of the face, like Botox.

For different parts of the body like lips and hands, there are many different brands of injectables more suited to combat wrinkles and plump the skin in that specific area. Each product is formulated differently based on the existing skin chemistry for that area of the face. Your cosmetic surgeon can guide you to the best filler injection treatment.

Preparing for filler injections

Prior to a filler injection, your cosmetic surgeon will conduct a consultation with you to discuss your needs and areas of concern. During this appointment, it is important to discuss your medical history and any allergies as well. Based on your consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will determine a plan regarding which filler injection treatments will best meet your needs.

What to expect during a filler injection

During your appointment, the area will be cleaned, and you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area.

This will be determined by your specialist, as some injection formulas already contain a numbing agent. Your provider will then perform the actual injection in the specified area.

You may experience mild discomfort depending upon whether you were given an anesthetic and how many units of injectables your specialist is using. Immediately after the injection, you will see some results. Typically, the injection area is smoother but also has redness and swelling that will only last a couple of days. Smoothing of the skin can be seen right away, with full results in one to two weeks.

Book an appointment

Filler injections can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are many different formulas on the market, and a cosmetic surgeon or specialist can guide you to the right one.

Start with a free consultation to get informed and decide if filler injections are right for you. If fine lines and wrinkles are a significant concern, regular filler injections can provide the treatment and appearance that you desire for your skin.
