Facts You Should Know About a Facelift Procedure

Numerous people have had a facelift performed, mostly to achieve a younger, more youthful appearance. Also known as a rhytidectomy, this procedure is a successful one for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and skin spots.

It is important to know more about the procedure before moving forward with it. Find some more information here and learn if it is the right move for you to make.

What does a facelift do?

Having a facelift can greatly improve the appearance of a person’s skin and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. However, there are other benefits that come from having this procedure performed which include:

  • Tighten up relaxed, sagging facial skin
  • Removing double chin or "turkey neck" appearance
  • Correct jowls around the jawline
  • Correct deepening folds around the mouth and nose areas

When the skin begins to thin, elasticity is lost, and this causes a few different issues on the face. Facelifts work to help bring back the elasticity, remove excess skin and tighten the skin. This creates a more youthful appearance.

Who should get a facelift procedure?

Nowadays, we are well past the times when only women of a certain age or celebrities were the ones who got facelifts. Now, almost anyone is eligible for a facelift, and getting them is as routine a procedure as they come. However, if you're looking for whether or not you may be a good candidate for a facelift, here are some things to consider.

A facelift can not only make the appearance of wrinkles go away; it is a great choice for restructuring the look of the face. For instance, those with extra fat and skin around the neck or cheekbones can benefit greatly from the tightening effect of a facelift. Those with a sagging jawline or droopy eyes can also look revitalized by a facelift.

Anyone with brow lines, forehead wrinkles, or crow's feet is a good candidate for a facelift as well.

A facelift can even improve things you may not think about. By lifting and tightening the skin, you can appear younger and make your eyes appear brighter and you more alert. It can also help improve your smile and the typical resting look on your face so that people see the real you more often.

Lastly, a facelift is a perfect way to take advantage of those cheekbones or to help accentuate other procedures you may have done, such as getting botox injections or enhancements to the jawline or lips.

Types of facelifts

There are two types of facelifts a patient can request - a standard or a mini. Both come with benefits and specific results.

The mini is less invasive, has a quicker recovery period and can fix smaller issues that a patient might be experiencing. This procedure is oftentimes used for those just starting to show signs of aging.

A standard facelift is more common, but has a longer recovery period, though it is only two to four weeks. It smooths out deeper fine lines and wrinkles and can be necessary when a patient has a significant amount of excess skin. This procedure can correct deep signs of aging, so it is a more common procedure for older patients wanting to look much younger.

The type of facelift a patient chooses to have will depend on many factors, including lifestyle and long-term goals. Both the patient and the surgeon must discuss these factors before moving forward. This allows the patient to see the results they want.

How the procedure is performed

The exact way a surgeon does the procedure depends not only on the type of facelift but the surgeon themselves. Each surgeon has their own way of tightening, toning and firming up the skin while re-sculpting the jawline area. Generally, initial incisions are made in the skin of the face, the excess skin is removed from the facial area and the remaining skin is secured. This then gives the patient a youthful, more rejuvenated appearance when they heal. This is a quick way to look and feel ten years younger, according to many patients.
