Dermabrasion Procedure from a Plastic Surgery Office

Plastic Surgery Schaumburg, IL

If you are tired of the way your face looks, plastic surgery is a possible solution. One of the most common ways to improve your appearance is dermabrasion. The goal of this procedure is to make your face look smoother. If you understand more about how this process works and who the typical candidates are, you can make the right choice.

People who choose this plastic surgery

There are many skin conditions that can have cosmetic impacts on the face. People whose skin easily becomes red or swells should consider this surgery. It may also be an effective way to remove tattoos. People who have frequent sun exposure and develop age spots may also benefit from dermabrasion. Common candidates also include patients with severe acne or scars from injuries or other accidents. It may also be a good way to remove fine lines or wrinkles.

How it works

This plastic surgery procedure resurfaces the skin to improve a patient’s facial appearance. The plastic surgeon will use an instrument that acts much like a sander: it removes the outer layers of the skin with a rotating device. An assistant will hold the patient’s face while the plastic surgeon uses the instrument by applying firm pressure. The process should not take longer than an hour. Depending on the person’s needs, it may only take a few minutes.

As skin grows back, it is usually much smoother. The plastic surgeon begins by numbing the patient with a local anesthetic or sedative. Some people may have other surgeries in combination with dermabrasion such as a facelift.

Recovery

Right after dermabrasion, the patient’s face will appear red or pink. This should begin to fade gradually. After two or three months, this discoloration should be gone. There may even be some swelling and sensitivity for several weeks after the procedure. Patients should contact their plastic surgeon if these issues continue beyond three months or if there is no facial improvement. It may be helpful for the person to limit exposure to the sun for up to one year.

Preparation for this plastic surgery

Candidates who consider this procedure should first visit with a plastic surgeon to discuss it. The plastic surgeon will explain what to expect and what typical results look like. Interested patients should inform the plastic surgeon if they take any medications or have any allergies.

After the dermabrasion

Because every patient is different, the results will vary from person to person. Many patients notice improved skin firmness and the absence of lines and wrinkles within three months of the surgery. The person may need to return to the plastic surgeon’s office in the future for another round of treatment. The effects of the procedure may not last forever.

Feel happy with your face again

When you meet someone for the first time, they may first notice your face. You want to make a good first impression. If you do not feel good about the skin on your face, plastic surgery options are available. Ask your plastic surgeon about dermabrasion and whether you are a good candidate for this operation.
