Breast Augmentation Facts and Myths
Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that has cosmetic and reconstructive purposes. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that about 300,000 women in the U.S. get the treatment each year.
The ever-increasing popularity of breast augmentation has led to some myths and misconceptions developing about what the treatment entails. This article will explore some of the more common myths and clear them up with facts.
Common myths about breast augmentation
Here are some of the more common misconceptions circulating about getting implants:
1. Implants will not last longer than 10 years
Breast implants are not designed to last forever, but they can last longer than 10 years. Implants need to be monitored and the findings of these evaluations are what determines when they need to be replaced. As a general rule, the longer a patient has had implants the more likely the implant is to develop complications that lead to it being replaced. Breast implants might need to be replaced due to capsular contracture, leakage or a rupture.
The contents of saline implants are absorbed by the patient's body when they leak, but the silicone gel in silicone breast implants needs to be surgically removed from the patient's body.
2. Breast implants can lead to autoimmune disorders
There are a few people who claim they have developed some health conditions due to getting implants. But, scientific studies have refuted any notion that implants are linked to autoimmune diseases. There is also a myth that implants increase a person's risk of developing breast cancer, but that is also false. The implants used in the U.S. all have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The only health issue that has been scientifically linked to breast implants is a rare form of lymphoma known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. One of the main symptoms of this condition the formation of a breast mass or fluid accumulation. It is treated by removing the implant and the capsule that surrounds it.
3. Breast implants can make breastfeeding unsafe
Nursing mothers are often concerned implants might make breastfeeding unsafe for their baby. Studies indicate that there is no risk to babies who are breastfed by mothers with silicone or saline breast implants.
4. Patients can pick any size of implants they want
There are a huge variety of implants, but plastic surgeons generally want their patients to go with implants that are similar to their natural bra size. It leads to better aesthetics and the implants are less likely to cause complications.
Patients get to pick how they want their breast implants to look. But, the doctor might recommend something else if their choices are extreme.
