Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery Tips

Brazilian butt lift Schaumburg, IL

A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) uses the patient's own body fat to improve the shape, size and contours of their buttocks. During the treatment, unwanted fat is removed from areas they have accumulated via a treatment called liposuction. The extracted fat is then injected into specific areas of the patient's buttocks, improving its tone and volume.

Getting a Brazilian butt lift requires surgery, and it can take up to a month before the patient is able to return to their regular activities.

Recovering from a Brazilian butt lift

Here are some things patients should expect to deal with during their recovery after getting a BBL:

1. Discomfort and pain

Many patients will deal with tenderness and pain coming from the areas where fat was suctioned from during liposuction. The technique used to extract the fat and the patient's tolerance for pain determines how severe it is. There might also be some swelling and bruising around the buttocks where fat was injected. The pain can be managed with prescription painkillers or over-the-counter medication.

Once a week has passed, most of the pain and discomfort will be gone.

2. Fluid drains

Drains might be attached to the areas worked on and the patient might notice blood mixed with the fluids drained or blood coming out of some of their incisions. This is all perfectly normal and it should subside after a few days.

3. Changes to the way you sit and sleep

When recovering from a BBL, patients should avoid sitting directly on their backside. This puts pressure on it and it can limit blood circulation, killing newly transferred fat cells before they can stabilize in their new locations. This can have a negative impact on the final results the patient ends up with and it can elongate the recovery process.

Donut pillows are specifically made for people recovering from Brazilian butt lifts, and they can be used to reduce the pressure on the buttocks when sitting. They transfer the person's weight to their thighs.

4. Wearing a compression garment for up to two months

Plastic surgeons often recommend the use of a compression garment when liposuction is performed. It helps the patient heal properly and reduce swelling. Wearing a compression garment also speeds up recovery.

5. Not being able to work for up to three weeks

The patient might not be able to work for a few weeks following the procedure. Patients are advised to get clearance from their surgeon before returning to work. Since direct pressure on the backside should be avoided during the recovery period, it is best to use a standing desk until they have fully recovered from the procedure.

6. Limited exercise

Exercise should be avoided for the first few weeks after the procedure. Patients will be able to return to light activities after three weeks, and they should be cleared for more vigorous activity after six weeks.

Other things patients should know when recovering from a BBL include:

  • Do not soak in hot tubs or pools until fully healed
  • Stretch out the legs frequently to avoid blood clots
  • Wear a compression garment regularly
  • Get lots of rest
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes
  • Always show up for follow up visits
