Are the Results of Liposuction Permanent?

Liposuction can help you hide the unsightly fat deposits you have on your belly, thighs, back, neck, calves and arms. You will no longer have to pick outfits that effectively masks areas of your body you are not proud of.

While dieting and exercising go a long way when it comes to getting rid of fat, certain fat deposits can be quite stubborn. Liposuction helps to get rid of fat from these areas and to improve their shape.

To answer the question posed in the title: Yes, the results of liposuction are permanent. Once fat is removed from an area, it is gone forever. However, liposuction does not stop the accumulation of future fat deposits. It is up to the patient to follow up with dieting and exercise. When these are integrated into the patient's lifestyle, the results of liposuction can be permanent.

How liposuction works

Liposuction is one of the least invasive procedures performed by plastic surgeons. It can be done as an outpatient treatment or in a hospital. The patient's health and how much fat is being removed often determines where the treatment is performed.

There are three popular types of liposuction:

  • Tumescent
  • Laser-assisted
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Each uses a rigid, thin tube known as a cannula. It is inserted into an incision that is made near the area being worked on. This tube is connected to a high-powered vacuum that breaks down fat cells and sucks them away.

Maintaining the results of liposuction

As we mentioned earlier, the results of liposuction are permanent. Since the patient's fat deposits are manually removed, their bodies will not replace them. Also, the patient will not accumulate more fat around these areas as long as they stick to a healthy lifestyle and maintain their weight.

The myth that fat cells show up in other areas when removed from one is not true. Patients simply need to avoid gaining significant amounts of weight by eating healthy and exercising often. Liposuction prevents treated areas from accumulating the same bulk they once had even if the patient gains weight, but the remaining cells in the area can become larger as the person gains weight. Liposuction does not help with weight loss and it is not an excuse to eat junk foods.

When it comes to getting the most out of liposuction, the most important thing a person can do is develop good exercise and diet habits. Patients who do both consistently tend to be the most satisfied with the procedure. Patients should be close to their ideal weight before getting the treatment since drastic weight loss can also diminish the results. People with poor exercising and dieting habits often do not get long-lasting results from liposuction.

We are here to help

Liposuction can help to improve the way you feel about your appearance. It gets rid of fat deposits and it makes it harder for treated cells to build up future deposits. All you have to do is maintain a healthy lifestyle and the results can last a lifetime.
