Liposuction is a surgical treatment that extracts fat from the body. It is typically performed on the abdomen, thighs, and arms. The ideal candidate for the procedure is close to or near their ideal body weight but has pockets of fat that they would like to remove. Liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery, and it is not recommended for people who are significantly overweight.
The liposuction treatment involves making small incisions in the skin and then inserting a small tube called a cannula, which is used to suck fat out of the body. Liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep during the procedure.
After the liposuction procedure, you can expect to see a difference in the shape of your body. The results are not instant because it takes time for the swelling to go down. Most people see their final results within six months to a year after the surgery.
The ideal candidate for liposuction
Anyone uncomfortable with certain regions of their body shape might consider liposuction. Good candidates for this procedure are people who are at a healthy weight but have troublesome areas of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise.
Some people choose to have liposuction on their thighs or stomach, while others often opt for treatment on their love handles or chest. Patients must have realistic expectations about their results; liposuction can improve one's appearance, but it is not a weight-loss solution.
The process
The surgery is generally done under general anesthesia, which means the patient is unconscious during the procedure. A small cut is made into the patient's skin, and a thin tube called a cannula is inserted. The tube is used to suction fat out of the body by connecting it to a vacuum. The different types of liposuction techniques used by cosmetic surgeons include:
- Tumescent liposuction: This is the most popular type of liposuction, in which a local anesthetic is injected into the area to be treated, and then the fat is suctioned out
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction: A special cannula that emits ultrasound waves is used to break up the fat cells before they are suctioned out
- Laser-assisted liposuction: This involves using a laser to melt the fat cells before they are suctioned out
After the procedure
After liposuction, patients can expect to see a difference in the shape of their bodies. It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, and it is not recommended for people who are considerably overweight. The best candidates for liposuction are those who are looking to refine their shape rather than those who are seeking to make a significant change.
