Advances in Plastic Surgery

Thinking about undergoing one or more plastic surgery procedures? Many people are looking into the options for cosmetic surgery nowadays, as there are continuing advances being made in this medical area. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there is about 9% of growth in both non-surgical and surgical cosmetic procedures annually.

Learning more about available plastic surgery options is the next step for someone thinking about undergoing this type of procedure. There is a process in place for those who want or need to have plastic surgery performed, and understanding this process gives a potential patient an overall idea of what to expect.

To fully understand this process, a patient should look into making an appointment with an experienced plastic surgeon. There is an abundance of plastic surgery options now available, of which many are continuing to be improved upon.

An overview of advances in plastic surgery

Some of the more common reasons why more people these days are undergoing such surgery are that it is more socially accepted now, is more affordable, and has seen many technological advances. Many of today’s advances are about using minimally invasive surgical procedures. These are three of the more exciting advances that have been made in the field of plastic surgery.

Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin injections continue to grow in popularity. The FDA approved this temporary aesthetic treatment, which is most often used to minimize or eliminate wrinkles and smooth and enhance the skin. These treatments allow for a more youthful look and can be used to smooth crow’s feet, diminish neckbands, lift the corners of the mouth and correct a gummy smile.

Derma fillers

Derma fillers are used to make thin lips look fuller, soften any facial fine lines and creases, fill in sunken areas of the face, and improve the overall look of a scar. There are a few different types of fillers, which means today’s plastic surgery patients have choices. Recovering from this minimally invasive surgical procedure typically only takes a couple of days and patients can expect the results to last many months.

Tumescent liposuction

The tumescent technique can now be used to treat patients interested in getting liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits. Only a local anesthetic is used, so patients no longer have to be placed under general anesthesia. The process works by a plastic surgeon injecting epinephrine along with a saline solution, which is intended to cause the fat to swell, making it easier to remove the extra fat cells.

Choosing the right plastic surgery procedure for your needs

There is no doubt that advancements in plastic surgery have made treatment much better for patients overall. However, it has given patients far more to consider, and understanding the pros and cons of each viable treatment option is always helpful. When deciding which treatment is best, patients should consider:

  • Their treatment goals
  • The level of invasiveness of the procedure
  • The longevity of the results
  • Their budget

Of course, your plastic surgeon should be there with you to help you through the decision-making process.

What you can expect throughout the treatment process

The treatment process looks different for every patient, depending on the plastic surgery services they choose, their schedule availability, healing times, and a range of other factors. In general, there are three visits that can be expected during the plastic surgery process, which are:

  • The consultation: This is the first visit and offers an opportunity to establish the treatment plan and discuss what results can be expected
  • The treatment visit: This could be in the form of a non-surgical experience such as dermal fillers or a surgical procedure such as a tummy tuck
  • The follow-up visit(s): A follow-up visit is typically required regardless of the type of plastic surgery procedure. This offers a way for the surgeon to check on the patient’s progress and discuss any concerns or complications the patient has experienced

The entire treatment process typically takes less than a few months, although treatment times can vary greatly depending on if they are surgical or non-surgical.
