5 Things to Know Before a Breast Augmentation

breast augmentation Schaumburg, IL

Breast augmentation surgery needs you to make a physical, mental and financial investment. Not to mention all the time that you will need to put in. You will need to take a couple of hours off when you go in for your consultation. You will also have to take time to have everything in place before you go in for the surgery. Most importantly, you will need to stay off your feet for a few weeks.

So, before you take the leap, find out all there is to know about the procedure. Here are a few things to think about before you get breast augmentation surgery.

Important facts about breast augmentation

The following are five facts to consider regarding this procedure.

1. Have a good reason for getting breast implants

Cosmetic surgery should be a way for a woman to feel good about themselves. No one should get cosmetic surgery to please someone else or as a reaction to a mean comment. Just to make sure, a good plastic surgeon will do a thorough screening to make sure that their patient wants a breast augmentation for the right reasons.

2. Have realistic expectations

Breast augmentation does not work like some item that a person can order off of Amazon. The patient could point to a photo of a woman with a similar build and say to their doctor, “I want these.” A good cosmetic surgeon will let their patient know that all things being equal, the implants will likely look different from the ones in the picture.

The reason being that two seemingly identical women will have different skin, musculature and mammary glands. So, even if they get the same exact implants, the result of the augmentation will be different in each woman.

Any surgeon who assures their patient that they can replicate a photo exactly should be avoided.

3. Make plans to accommodate weeks of recovery time

Breast augmentation is a surgery, and not the insignificant type. Meaning that a person will need time to heal after the procedure. For the first few days, the patient will have to stay off their feet and avoid bending or reaching for things. In preparation for this, the person should get help for the 48 hours that follow the procedure.

After ten days, the patient should be able to resume work. But they should stay away from exercise and lifting heavy things for around six weeks.

4. Know that it will take time for the breasts to settle into their permanent position and shape

In the days after the surgery, the patient will notice that their breasts sit high on their chest. This is to be expected. With time, the breasts will settle into a better position. The shape of the breasts will also improve after some months.

5. The implants will look great for a long time, but maybe not forever

Breast implants have improved in quality and durability. That is good news because the patient can look forward to many, many years of great breasts. That said, implants will eventually have to be replaced.

When that time comes, the person will need to make a decision. They will have to choose between getting a replacement set of implants or simply having their implants removed.
