Benefits of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Tattoo Removal

While the process of placing a tattoo can seem fairly straightforward, removing the tattoo is more complex than people believe. This is due, in part, to the fact that the ink is placed underneath the top layer of skin. Fortunately, we provide professional tattoo removal with IPL tattoo removal therapy.

Short for Intense Pulsed Light, IPL therapy is a unique form of tattoo removal, similar to laser tattoo removal. With this type of treatment, we direct a beam of light onto the skin to remove the top layer, known as the epidermis. This is the layer that contains the tattoo. Benefits of IPL tattoo removal therapy include:

  • The likelihood of less pain during the procedure
  • A less painful procedure than other options
  • A more versatile broad spectrum of light instead of other medical lasers
  • Customization to the patient’s specific needs
  • The ability to treat larger tattoos covering more of the body

  • Understanding Tattoo Removal

With IPL tattoo removal therapy, we will need to test the skin’s reaction to the laser before continuing treatment for the patient. During a consultation, we will also review the patient’s medical history and current condition. Once we determine if this treatment is the right treatment for the patient, we will begin the treatment.

With IPL removal therapy, the patient may need to schedule multiple sessions over several appointments for complete removal of larger tattoos. In cases of treating multiple tattoos, the patient may also need several appointments. During the treatment, the patient will need to sit or lie down a specific way, so we can remove the specific tattoo.

We will do everything we can to help keep the patient comfortable, as well. We will then shine the IPL over the specific area to remove the top layer of skin. While the patient may feel some pain during and after the procedure, it will cause less pain than traditional laser tattoo removal. Along with that, this treatment is less painful to the skin.

    Follow-up Care

Following an appointment and session with IPL, the patient will probably notice minor swelling on or around the site. Since each patient is unique, the treatment may vary per patient. Factors to consider with tattoo removal include:

  • The size of the tattoo(s) we need to remove
  • The number of tattoos
  • The type of ink (Including colored ink)
  • The condition of the patient’s skin

  • We will take time to go over each of these factors before the procedure. A few days after an appointment, we will determine if the patient needs more appointments to help the tattoo fade away completely. Since the skin needs time to heal the surface of the skin again, the patient will need to give it time to heal.

Patients may need to use an anti-bacterial ointment to help ease any swelling, blistering or minor bleeding. We will review the proper care to promote recovery, which typically includes keeping the tattoo out of the sun, not wearing clothes that cause friction and using any medication we recommend. By following our treatment plan, patients will be able to watch their tattoo fade away and prevent long-lasting damage to the skin.
